MIHEC Student Profile: Jacob

I love being active and diving into a good story. Every night before I go to sleep, I make time to read. I especially love graphic novels and comics. When I’m not reading, I’m usually playing video games or learning about science. I am also a big fan of the Special Olympics. I’ve participated in floor hockey, bowling, golf, swimming, and track and field. I also love traveling to new places and eating good food.

I am currently in a transition program in Minnetonka. My favorite part of school is my work experience class. I’ve learned how to look up available jobs, write a resume, and draft cover letters. Through this class, I’ve had the chance to try out several different jobs. I have learned that I prefer working inside, where there aren't so many bugs! I like working with my hands and being around other people, rather than just sitting at a computer or doing the same thing over and over.

I decided I wanted to go to college after watching my siblings go. It looked like a lot of fun, and I wanted that same experience for myself. I will attend the University of Iowa through the UI REACH program starting in August of 2026.

Going to college means a lot to me because it's a chance to meet new people and make new friends. I’m looking forward to being on campus, taking classes that interest me, especially in areas like construction or health sciences, and having the freedom to do things on my own, away from home. I’m a little nervous about navigating a big campus and finding my way around, but I’m ready for the challenge. I want to build a routine, learn new things, and eventually find a job where I can stay busy and work with a team.
